A very rare Edward VI York penny - 1551 (C12). Central Tudor rose, legend around. E D G ROSA SINE SPINA. Edward by the Grace of God a rose without a thorn. Quartered shield of arms over long cross. York mint, very base issue. Due to their low fineness, the base pennies were devalued to halfpennies until they were replaced by the fine silver issue towards the end of 1551.
