GB QV Penny Red 1854 SG17 C1(m) Die I Alpha II Perf 7 at Left Variety Cat £750

  
This is a lovely example of this scarce Constant Variety "Perf 7 at Left" makes interesting reading as to how this major printing incident left seven perforation pins working out of 19 due to "speculative" damage to the plate. Off centre as so many of these early perforations are but the letters are visible.

The first letter (Alpha II) is probably a "C" but may possibly be D or G as part print of the letter apears to be missing, second letter is "A" (all this variety are of the first "A" Column). Perf 16, blued paper, Wmk just shows on Photoshop Wmk extraction technique being small crown & upright. Cancelled with London Inland Section horizontal oval with 20 in diamond.

The missing perfs do give an image of roulleting but if you study this variety you will see that it was almost certainly not the case althought some emergency procedure may have taken place to ease margin seperation. We have not plated this example as it is a close call between a few, the plates known to have this variety are 193-198,200-202, R1-R6: Plate 199 does not have a recorded example!
