Great Britain-East Anglia 1d Penny 895-910 EF45 NGC silver St. Spink #960var and North #483var. There are many varieties of the St. Edmund Memorial Coinage with different moneyers and legends. Some pennies are more common, some are more rare. We believe this to be one of the more rare varieties and have been unable to find another. The moneyer is Bosecin as noted on the reverse legend: BOSECIN MONETA. It is the obverse which makes this coin intriguing. Firstly, the legend reads: SCE EADMVND REP. Looking closely, the second E in the legend? The first E in Edmund? Is of a different style from all other Es. It has the rounded back of a C instead of the straight back of the E as if it is a ligatured CE. We have seen this before on some of these pennies but it is not common. Secondly, flanking the central A are groups of four pellets. Ve not seen this at all on any other piece though we have seen three pellets catalogued in MEC1. This is a find for a variety collector or anyone who likes the more unusual coins.
