John 1199-1216, Short Cross Penny, Walter/London, Class 5c, S-1352, Ex Birchall

  

A nice example of this Class 5c short cross penny struck at London with Walter as moneyer. Well struck with light wear and darkly toned. A small striking perforation is noted at 6 o'clock and a couple of spots of what appears to be lacquer on reverse.

From the Samuel Birchall Collection (DNW 4/5/21 Lot 24) which was formed by the famed numismatist and issuer of tokens around the turn of the 19th century. A rare opportunity to obtain a coin from a collection untouched since it was formed over 200 years ago and with the exceptional Birchall provenance.
